Monday Morning Question

Monday Morning Question:

What kind of volunteer work have you done in your lifetime?  If you haven't done any, what would you like to do?

My answer:  Some of the things I have done are worked at the food bank, done crisis pregnancy counseling, done campaign work, and been an ESL teacher.

Now let's find out about each other.  How about you?

  1. I worked a suicide hotline for the United Way for a few months, but I couldn't take the stress of talking people out of suicide and getting their permission to patch them through to 911.  I was glad I was there to stop the ones I could, but the ones I couldn't just got to me.

  2. I once thought about working with terminally ill children but when I talked with hospital staff.  I realised I didn`t have the strength for the commitment needed.  I would like to work at a kennel for rescued dogs though.  I have an empathy with dogs and I`d find it very rewarding....    Sandra x

  3. i did voluntary work for local hospital, they were having old buildings pulled down and wanted someone to do as much research into archives etc so as to be able to save a lot of memorabilia and history about the place before it disappeared, being a history buff i was asked to do it, i interviewed old nurses who worked there in the 2nd world war and got hold of old equipment etc before it all disappeared, loved every minute of it!

  4. I worked as a candy striper during high school, so volunteering has always been in my blood (i guess?!!).  Since my son died from cancer 5 years ago, I have worked with the pediatric oncology team & child life team at our children's hospital - and I also help out at our local Gilda's Club.  It's rewarding work!

  5. I have worked at the Faith Centre here in Bellefonte...they have a food bank, clothes store and bible study and Salvation Army office.  I just tagged clothes.  I've volunteered at churches that I have attended for different things.  I like to think that I do my own charity work.  When I see someone who is in need or hurting, I like to help them, be it food or clothing or emotional support.  Isn't that what we all should do??  Good question, lovely girl! xox

  6. I have worked voluntarily for The Red Cross, but my main interest for the past few years has been with carers. Especially Mental Health Carers. I never thought of it as voluntary work though. I enjoyed myself too much.

  7. I have helped my mom pass out goodies to the veterans at the veterans hospital and nursing home. She works for the Army and we always make things for every holiday. I would really like to do some volunteer work at a homeless shelter. I think it would be so rewarding to serve food, or something like that.

  8. I worked as a Candy Striper in a hospital delivering mail, flowers, meals to the patients and taking information and paperwork to various nursings stations.  Can you believe that I actually would actually be given prescriptions to take to the hospital pharmacy, and then take the medicine back to the nursing station.  I'm sure that does NOT happen in today's world. The worst part was delivering "specimins" to the lab.  If we saw a urine specimin sitting in the out box we would sneakily just pass that nurses station by - LOL!  You know that would NEVER happen in today's world either!!!  It was a lot more trusting back then.

I also volunteer thru church for various things like teaching, nursery, cooking, etc.

  9. Well, as you know, I was a missionary for many years, but before that, I began a drug and alcohol counseling program for teens.  I really loved that as well.  Now I would like to work with the homeless.  Blessings, Penny

  11. The most rewarding volunteer work I have done was for the Leukemia Society.  I did addressing, filing, data management and typing.  I went to the dinner events and handled tickets and such.
I have taught Sunday school for adult classes and kids both.  I liked to work in my photo skills and make projects that other teachers could not do.
For my Flying club I edited the club newsletterk wrote articles, took pictures, and acted a publicity director for the club events, and I flew my own plane to the events, too.
At work I did after school supervising and extra noon supervising. I ran clubs on my own time.
For the old folks home I live in I volunteered to do email for the reisdents, and I taught harmonica classes, and I even entertained with my music--such as it is.
Hey, that is not a bad resume after all.

  12. I'd like to volunteer at World Vision, helping children of the world.  Sadly they require more hours than I can provide at this time. I've mostly volunteered at the schools, helping with newsletters and different publications.

  13. I worked at the food pantry that was located in the church next to my house for a couple months on Wednesday nights before bell choir. According to the school, I walked around for two hours collecting cans to donate but shhhh! I never did that. :[ Eventually, I'd like to do more than just donating clothes, etc. as I do now. Hey, I've got time.

  17. I've done various fund raising activities...bike-a-thons, bowl-a-thons, walk-a-thons...etc. The biggest thing I ever did was volunteer as a "keeper" at the Special Olympics. I was assiged an athlete and it was my job to make sure he got to his various events on time, help him with anything he needed...etc. Very positive experience.
