moday morning question

What Fall memory from your childhood stands out most pronounced in your mind?

My answer:  My brothers and sisters and I raking leaves and singing slave songs.  Why slave songs you ask?  Well, we had almost two acres of lawn, and we thought that was a lot, and we felt overwhelmed (okay, we were lazy!).  At the time, we thought our parents were mean to make us rake all those leaves, and we felt like we were so put upon, that we sang those slave songs we learned in school.  Now that I am thinking about it, why did a bunch of children of caucasion European descent learn slave songs anyway?  Was that supposed to help us treat people of color better?  I just remember the teachers saying, "ok class, we are going to learn something about culture, let's sing slave songs".  It was kind of crazy.  So somehow we thought we could relate while we were raking leaves, and we would sing slave songs.  Now, that's just downright crazy...

So how about you?  What is your childhood Fall memory?

  1. dad never believed in raking leaves. He said it would cover the ground and protect the grass during the winter. Every spring our grass was greener and greener. He was right. Good thing cause I would hate raking leaves.

  9. Fall makes me think of starting school.. often a new school (we moved around alot).  The butterflies in my stomic, the hope that what I was wearing was fashionable, that I had done well picking the new outfit out and my hair and make-up were just right.. fumbling with new locker combonations, the slight chill in the air and the smell of burning leaves.

    Much Love,
    Mary

  10. Raking leaves at my grandparents & then jumping in the piles before they were burnt-that is the best smell to me still 25 years later. A warm fire in the fireplace, making smores, playing checkers by the firelight.

  12. I  think of the times my sister and I were raking leaves for money. We loved it! We'd rake yards till we had enough money to go to the movies or buy makeup, or some little treat we wanted.

  19. My very favorite fall memory is somebody (Not me, I don't think I did the work)  raking all the leaves from our beautiful huge back yard with lots of trees, into a pile under the gunny sack swing.  Then, we climbed up the tree, and swung on the gunny sack swing, dropping into the leaves!  All my friends gathered at my house, my yard and we always had the best times!  Merry

  20. Welcome back!!  And congrats on the nom!

The one fall memory that stands out is the one year, when me and some friends were trick-or-treating IN THE SNOW.  Snow on Halloween.  Yeah, that would stand out...lol.

  22. Hey Krissy darling!  First thanks for the postcard it was beautiful! I wasn't up to getting one for you but I am now so you'll be getting one soon.

    I'm back!

I think the fall memory that stands out the most for me was being "taught" how to ride a bike, it was cold but no snow yet, sort of slush.  What a time for my brother's to teach me to ride.  They got sick of it and finally and pushed me down our neighbor's driveway that went straight down into a busy street.... They figured I learn out of fear... nope not me, I did learn how to fall down quickly!!  Yep I had mean brothers, but if anyone else picked on me they were my defenders!

    Love ya,
    Promise

  27. I vaguely recall the slave songs Krissy. I do remember being the laziest bunch of kids who thought it was so horrid to clean or do anything around the house or yard. We so seldom helped out that when we did it was a big deal and we resented it. The worst being doing the dishes for eight hungry people... now that is the worst fall memory. Ok for me it was a crisp slightly cold night. I was sixteen and wearing a blue sweater and getting ready to go to a football game... I recalled the smell in the air. It was a mixture of fall smells but most definately of peoples fire places. I was so happy and like many years it was the hope of a new year and a new life somehow. Every fall started out well for me in my mind just about as a kid. I promised myself this would be the year. I would get good grades, I would have a boyfriend, I would make lots of pals. lol
