Monday Morning Question

Monday Morning Question:

What is the most unusual thing you have ever eaten?

Hmm, I have a few.  When we were little my Dad made us eat octypus and squid.  We also ate snails.  I don't care if it was called escargots, it was still snails.  And we had fish eggs.  Yes cavier, but still fish eggs.  Gee we were fed well!  And I liked it all back then, until I found out what each thing was.  Another thing we had was COW'S TONGUE.  That was undecidedly the grossest!  It had the consistency of corned beef, lol.  And then my Dad was constantly making ox tail soup.  It was actually good, but I knew what it was, lol.  The tail end of an ox!  And he had turtle soup but I never tried it, eegads!  He probably snuck other things by us but I am glad I never found out what they were!

  1. LOL I've had escargot too...it sort of reminds me of clams...chewy with loads of garlic and butter. Lots of different types of caviar too. Octypus and squid too. Add to that eel, rattlesnake, alligator, reindeer...I was tricked into trying chocolate covered grasshoppers as a kid. LOL Since I eat raw fish all the time (sushi and sashimi) it's hard to think of anything weird that really stands out.

  4. My mum and I used to eat pigs trotters. Boil them in a pan of water, with a bit of sage. Not sure I fancy 'em anymore though.

  6. I'm not too adventurous when it comes to food, but I do have an answer!  My Mum once served up plates of fish fingers - fish in breadcrumbs - for my Brother and I, and wouldn't believe us when we told her that there was no fish inside.  No, something had gone badly wrong at the fish finger making place, instead of fish inside our fish fingers we had paper!!  Not nice!

  10. While I was at school we were on a holiday to France.  While staying with a family there I once sat down to a nice steak dinner....or so I thought.  After the meal I thanked the hostess and asked her in my best French what type of steak it was.  She replied that it was horse meat and not steak!  I don`t know how I managed to keep hold of my stomach.  Needless to say I have never eaten it again!

  13. Snails, yes, ONCE, so I could say that I have.  Prepared with enough garlic butter they tasted okay, but the thought of what they were was chilling.
Squid, called calimari, it is edible, but like snails, you'd rather not know.
In the plant world, Avocados, Artichoke, Asparagus.  I'm not giving you an alpabetical list, it just happens that they all begin with A.  In the fruit realm, mango, pomegranate, and my all time favorite taste treat, Cumquats.  I could eat them my the handful.  Sweet peel, and tart fruit on the inside. Red grapefruit and blood oranges aren't very unusual, but are somewhat rare.  Tny Tot canned sardines from the North Sea are rare, and expensive.  You eat the whole fish, smaller than a lead pencil.  Head and all. And Grunion.  a fish you catch by hand.  Nets and scoops not allowed.  At certain phases of the moon the high tide washes schools of grunion onto the beach to spawn.  You are allowed to catch as many as you can... by hand.  You have the lenth of time between one wave and the next.  Yes, you get wet, and no, you dont get many.  Like tiny tot sardines, you fry em and eat 'em whole.

  15. When I was in grade school several of the boys ate white paste and liked it.  I have heard that it is not good for a person to eat.   So I hope no one does this at home.  Pass it on.    lol     mark

  17. Hi Krissy,
This is a great question, and I have several unusual things. Tripe soup (stomach lining), my Dad was also one for using different ingredients. It always tasted great..until you found out what it was. He made a really good chop suey, using ox tails. Over the weekend, went to a Greek restraunt in Chicago. Had steamed dandelions, which tasted bitter. Fried goat cheese, that made me gag. LOL!   ~Deborah

Oh I just remembered my cousins made me eat a dog treat once. It was shaped just like a chocolate hershey kiss and that is what they told me it was. It did not taste good at all but gave them a good laugh... Lol.
Hope you are having a good week!
    Hugs to you and John!!

  19. I grew up in a very diversified food group. My mother would make unusual things to make us appreciate the value of trying something new.

I love squid, if it is cooked right.  smothered in a white garlic sauce, good.

Snake was the most unusual.  I was on Bivac and the guys decided they had their fill of c-rations.  so, they caught a snake and cooked it on an open fire.  What else in the middle of a SW desert.  It wass pretty good.  One of the guys knew what he was doing. Noone got sick.

  20. Well, mine is not near that gross, sorry!  LOL  The most unusual thing I think I've ever eaten was fried dandelion heads... yeah, the little yellow flowers that everybody kills.  My grandmother and I used to pick them and wash them.  She made some sort of batter and we fried them.  They were actually, really good!

  21. Hm.  I *love* beef tongue.  But I've never had brains (nor will I, especially with mad cow running around).  Probably the grossest thing *I* ever had was black pudding (back before I started keeping kosher, naturally).  And, I actually liked it.

    eww.
